Coming off their recent Super Bowl triumph, the Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up for another formidable season in 2024. However, to maintain their winning momentum, the team must secure the return of pivotal defensive players. Two key components of the defensive lineup, L’Jarius Sneed and Chris Jones, are poised to enter free agency this season.
The Chiefs have communicated to Sneed that the franchise tag is an option, but they are actively working towards negotiating a long-term deal with the cornerback before considering the tag. On the flip side, the team is currently focused on finalizing a new contract for defensive tackle Chris Jones, as per The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
Chris Jones has undeniably solidified his position as a crucial player for the Chiefs. With three Super Bowl victories to his name, Jones’ impressive stats from the 2023 season include 10.5 sacks, 30 tackles, and four passes defended. Since his rookie year in 2016, Jones has been a cornerstone of the team, earning five Pro Bowl selections and establishing himself as a Chiefs legend.
Equally instrumental to the team’s success is L’Jarius Sneed, who has played a vital role in Kansas City’s achievements. Drafted in 2020, Sneed has contributed significantly to the team’s two Super Bowl triumphs. In the 2023 season, he showcased his prowess with 78 tackles, 14 passes defended, and two interceptions. Notably, Sneed made a pivotal endzone stop against the Baltimore Ravens during the AFC Championship Game.
The tag deadline approaches
As the franchise tag deadline of March 5 approaches, the Chiefs are faced with crucial decisions regarding the future of these indispensable players.
In an interview with The Kansas City Star, head coach Andy Reid expressed his confidence in both players, stating, « Chris and L’Jarius have been instrumental to our success on defense. We value their contributions and are committed to finding the best way to keep them in Kansas City. »
Moreover, Reid underscored the importance of continuity within the team and emphasized the significance of retaining core players for another successful season. « We understand the impact that Chris and L’Jarius have on our defense. It’s crucial for us to maintain stability and continue building on our achievements, » Reid added.
With negotiations in progress and the franchise tag looming, the Chiefs are diligently working towards securing the presence of these key defensive assets for the upcoming season.
