Julius Erving was a bastion of the New York Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers. He won two championships of the extinct ABA and an NBA title, and his legacy reached far beyond the courts. That is why Coach Prime, Deion Sanders, considers him one of his greatest idols.
Thanks to his athletic ability, Erving is considered one of the greatest basketball players in history, but he went even further off the court. In 1986, he graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, he was a successful businessman, sports analyst, owner of a NASCAR team, and held management positions in NBA teams and various private companies.
He still holds multiple NBA records, and his trophy case includes Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards from both the ABA and the NBA. He was named to the NBA All-Star Game twice and was named an NBA All-Star 11 times.
That is why Deion Sanders does not hesitate to praise his career every chance he gets, as he just did in a post on his Instagram account.
Coach Prime’s tribute to Dr. J
« Dr. J!! This was and still is 1 of my heroes, » Sanders began in the message accompanying a photo of Erving in an ABA All-Star Game uniform.
« He was Professional, Classy, Well Dressed, Spoke Well, A Straight Baller, A Game Changer that also faced Adversity and Overcame it, » assured Coach Prime.
« This why He was always my HERO!! They called him DOCTOR, and he didn’t have a Ph.D.! » said the former NFL player, recalling the nickname Erving was given during his playing days due to the surgical precision of his game.
Deion Sanders met his idol
Despite the admiration that he has always professed for the Sixers icon, it was only last November when Sanders had the opportunity to meet him. Erving, who has always been a football fan, decided to go to a Colorado Buffaloes game, the team coached by Coach Prime.
The encounter took Sanders by surprise, and he couldn’t help but bow before his childhood idol. Later, when asked about it, Erving said in disbelief at what had happened: « That didn’t really happen. It’s a mirage. You just think it happened. »
However, for Coach Prime it was something very real, as he just demonstrated in his post praising the career and life of Dr. J, one of the basketball icons of all time.
